Lago Llanquihue is located about 20 kilometers to the north of the city of Puerto Montt and is surrounded by picturesque towns like Puerto Varas, Frutillar, Ensenada and Puerto Octay. It is the second largest lake in Chile and provides a huge variety of landscapes and activities, such as sailing in the summer and skiing in winter.
The area was colonized in the nineteenth century by German immigrants, so their influence is seen in the architecture, pastries, sausages and beers. Puerto Varas is known as "the city of roses", due to the large numbers of this type of flower that adorn the streets. It offers boutique hotels, fine craft shops and restaurants that incorporate elements of regional cuisine.
From here you can take part in a number of outdoor activities, among which stand out the Parque Nacional Vicente Pérez Rosales national park, the Saltos del Petrohué waterfalls, the imposing Osorno volcano and sailing on Lago Todos Los Santos, a journey that is known as Cruce Andino, or Andean Crossing.
The route is one of the most beautiful in the south of Chile. As the journey progresses, the vegetation changes to dense forests.
The Cruce Andino departs from the pier in Petrohué and ends in the city of Bariloche, Argentina, but the trip may also extend until the town of Peulla, crossing the emerald waters of Lago Todos Los Santos and enjoying a lush landscape surrounded by native forests and the incomparable view of the Osorno, Puntiagudo and Tronador volcanoes.
