Winter is here full force and we are all thinking about somewhere warm and pleasant and fun. South America is in spring time now and a perfect place to get out of your frigid misery.

But where should your go? There's loads of wonderful South American countries to choose from.

Brazil for beaches and cultural attractions--and why not take advantage of the incredible deals on gems. I paid for my trip the last two times I visited Brazil by purchasing aquamarines, amethysts and topaz which are easily available for a fraction of what you pay in the USA., (Only buy from reputable dealers--not off the street.)

Argentina is is terrific, Buenos Aries is a shoppers paradise, especially if you like leather goods. A fine leather jacket in good European fashion can be bought for one third the price in the USA. Simply put, Iguaza Falls is the most fascinating destinations in Argentina. Then there is the awesome Lakes District. Tourists and Argentine's love coming to visit Bariloche, and almost always for the same reason: skiing and hiking.

Peru is a delight for touring, especially Machu Picchu, a renowned Inca temple hidden for centuries in the remote Andes Mountains. Lima has some amazing historical attractions, good surfing and good shopping. A visit to the upper Amazon River is a fascinating adventure that can't be beat.

Chile, although suffering tragic earthquakes has recovered and is a good place to explore, especially the Patagonia region which is a hikers paradise. The quaint fishing villages are my favorite, the seafood there is fantastic!

Colombia is now a tremendous bargain. Cartagena, located on the Caribbean coast is the first Spanish settlement in the Americas. This historical town is fun and full of Colombian tradition and culture, as well as spectacular buildings and stunning beaches.

Ecuador is a bargain. There are pristine beaches, bustling cities with a beautiful culture, and breathtaking natural features. The Galapagos Islands are a huge attractions and should be on everyone's bucket list.

Another way to see these countries is to vacation on a cruise ship. We just cruised around South America on Regent Seven Seas Cruises and had a blast.
